In 10th grade Honors English, we will critically examine the ideas that have shaped our understanding of knowledge in the modern world, using both fiction and nonfiction to explore the limits of what we think we know about our selves and the world.  We will trace the origin of radically skeptical thought from the dawn of reason through the 21st century using the works of Montaigne, Descartes, Rousseau, Berkeley, Hume, Nietzsche, and other influential thinkers, applying their ideas to classic works by Shakespeare, Salinger, Tolstoy, and others.  In doing so, we will wrestle with two major issues: “What can we really know,” and “Does the world shape us, or do we shape the world.”
